The process of ion nitriding not only improves the surface hardness of the part, but also inevitably affects the plasticity of the material through the formation of a harder surface shell layer. Experiments have shown that the elongation and section shrinkage of materials treated by ion nitriding are reduced, indicating a loss of plasticity. However, by using an atmosphere with a lower nitrogen content for ion nitriding, reducing the treatment temperature and nitriding time, the effects on the strength and plasticity of the material can be mitigated.
